The cemetery was started by the Lee family and was located in the northwest portion of Section 3.

Sections 1, 2 and 3 of the cemetery, except the Lee Burial ground, were owned by Pricilla and Uriah Gordon.  They sold the 3.55 acres to George W. Clark and John K. Gowdy on April 19, 1873.  This area was designated as a private burial ground by George W. Clark and John K. Gowdy in 1873.  George W. Clark was the first person to be buried in this new portion of the cemetery on August 2, 1873.  George W. Clark’s interest in the 3.55 acres was transferred to James W. Green on November 15, 1873.  Many lots were sold privately and various bodies were buried thereon.

On October 1, 1891, the cemetery was incorporated.
